Funding Sources
The different ways you can fund your investments
When you invest, you choose how to send your money. Play Money supports several funding methods.
Funding Methods
ACH is the most common and convenient way to fund investments. When you choose ACH, the platform automatically pulls funds from your linked bank account after you confirm your investment. There is nothing else you need to do — the payment happens in the background.
To use ACH, you must first link a bank account via Plaid.
Processing time: 1 to 3 business days.
For more details, see ACH Transfers.
With a wire transfer, you manually send money from your bank to the SPV's bank account using specific routing and account details. After you confirm your investment, the platform provides wire instructions that you take to your bank (online or in person) to initiate the transfer.
Wire transfers are often used for larger investment amounts or when ACH is not available.
Processing time: Same day to 2 business days for domestic wires.
For more details, see Wire Transfers.
External funding is used when the money comes from a third party — most commonly an IRA custodian or a DAF (Donor-Advised Fund) sponsor. If you are investing through an IRA or DAF investment profile, you will select external funding as your payment method.
With external funding, you instruct your custodian or sponsor to send the funds on your behalf.
Processing time: Depends on your custodian or sponsor's timeline.
Quick Comparison
| Method | Best for | How it works | You need to |
|---|---|---|---|
| ACH (Bank Transfer) | Most investors | Automatic pull from your bank | Link a bank account via Plaid |
| Wire Transfer | Larger amounts, or if ACH is unavailable | You send a wire from your bank | Follow the wire instructions provided |
| External | IRA and DAF investors | Your custodian sends the funds | Instruct your custodian to initiate the transfer |
Our recommendation: If you are investing as an individual or through an entity (LLC, Trust, etc.) and have a U.S. bank account, ACH is the easiest option. It requires no manual action after you confirm your investment.
Common Questions
Can I change my funding source after investing? The funding source is selected when you make the investment and cannot be changed after confirmation. If you need to use a different method, contact our support team for assistance.
Are there fees for different payment methods? Play Money does not charge additional fees based on your payment method. However, your bank may charge fees for outgoing wire transfers. Check with your bank for details.
What are the limits? ACH transfers may have limits set by your bank. Wire transfers generally do not have platform-imposed limits. The minimum investment amount is set by each deal (typically $500).
I invest through an IRA. Can I use ACH? No. IRA investments require external funding because the money must come from your custodian, not from your personal bank account. The platform will automatically guide you to the correct funding method based on your investment profile type.
